![]() The material component of both spells now requires a melee weapon worth at least one silver piece. The wording was changed from “as part of the action to cast this spell, you must make a melee attack with a weapon against one creature within the spell’s range” to “you brandish the weapon used in the spell’s casting and make a melee attack with it against one creature within 5 feet of you.” The range was changed from “5 feet” to “Self (5-foot radius)”. There’s been a lot of speculation about how these changes interact with other gish kit options, and whether they change the way the spells work. Hex + Eldritch Blast is a very powerful combination, and I hope that you have a ton of fun with it once you get a second beam on your Eldritch Blast at level 5.A before-and-after comparison of the original vs. I'm glad that you're going to try the easy path and stay out of melee and to try to use spells properly. But I can't see Shillelagh being a good option. A build with Shadow Blade combined with either Green Flame Blade or Booming Blade is also quite viable. The easiest path would be to do the typical Hex + Eldritch Blast strategy, and using your bonus action to move your Hex around. But Shillelagh won't be that good for a GOO Tomelock. Shadow Blade will be 3D8 + dexterity or strength psychic damage once you're level 5, so it's still a good tactic even after you reach level 5. ![]() Shillelagh with extra attack, or even with a Cleric's Divine Strike isn't bad (especially with Spiritual Weapon on top), but as a Great Old One Tome Lock, you won't have extra attack or really anything at all to make Shillelagh worth using. It's not too bad for levels 1-4, but once you reach level 5 and martial classes get extra attack and cantrips get an extra damage die, it's not very good anymore. Shadow Blade is a good choice for Warlocks, it's not too crazy. If you're new to D&D, it's probably best to avoid doing something too crazy with your character. This also means you can free up a spell slot for something else (hold person, darkness, protection form evil & goodetc). This bit is cheesy but if nothing is really happening you could always say you are walking around with a hand on each club and every minute you alternate casting Shillelagh on them so they are almost always active and ready. I think Mirror Image is a better defensive spell and effectively means you can potnetially dodge 3 attacks and given you need to maintain concnetration on your Shadow Blade this might be the better option.ĥ) Don't forget you can throw the Shadow Blade and use a bonus action to summon it back to you so you can also be a ranged support as well.Ħ) Shillelagh can be cast on two seperate clubs (gain requires two turns to do) so if push comes ot shove you can always use a club in each hand. EDIT: amended wording based on reply below to: To make best use of this you'll need to have the Dual Weilder Feat and /or multi classing to Fighter or Ranger to ge the Two Weapon Fighting Style.Ĥ) Defensive spells is again a bit more of a character choice: Armour of Agathys has a long duration but I view it as more of a "come and hit me" spell as you want creatures to hit you so you can deal the damage from the spell. Shadow Blade is also going to use your concentration as well.Ģ) You can use Two Weapon Fighting with Shadow Blade + Club BUT you won't get your ability modifer to damage for which ever weapon is in your off hand. So, assuming right handed character, you need to decide whether you are going for right hand shadow blade (2d8+dex psychic), left hand Shillelagh (1d8 bludgeoning) or right hand Shillelagh (1d8 +cha bludgeoning) left hand (2d8 psychic).ģ) To make best use of this you'll need to have the Fighting Style: Two Weapon which means multi classing to Fighter or Ranger and/or getting the Dual Weilder Feat. It's not impossible to do it, just a character decision if it is wise.ġ) Shadow Blade and Shillelagh are both bonus action casting times so you will need 2 turns to get them both active.
